Did You Know? While serving in the Coast Guard during WWII, Alex Haley taught himself the craft of writing stories. It is said that he was often paid by other sailors to write love letter to their girlfriends.
Why all this about Alex Haley? Because on this date back in 1921, Alex was born. So, happy birthday to Alex Haley (1921-1992). He was an African American writer and the Chief Journalist for the US Coast Guard before retiring to become a senior editor for Reader’s Digest.
